Meet the Board: Lauren Smith, President

As we kick-off 2018-2019, I wanted to share a little bit about myself; what inspires and motivates me as a marketer.

Who am I?

I am a 35-year-old, happily married, mother of three rescue pups. Originally from Roanoke, Indiana (I guarantee you’ve never heard of it), I moved to Hampton Roads over a decade ago with a couple of friends and big dreams of living near the ocean. I love to stay active through socializing, sports, and traveling. My creative spirit is fulfilled by going to museums, taking photos, painting, writing, etc. I absolutely love my job as Marketing Coordinator for One Hour Heating & Air Conditioning.

Why marketing?

For me, it’s always been about the people. What (and who) influences them and how products or services fit into the mix. Whether we like it or not, we are constantly surrounded by advertising. And it’s a necessity now more than ever, no matter the size of your business or budget.

Why AMA?

I became part of this organization for the same reason I think most people do — to expand my knowledge and influence in the Hampton Roads area by being a part of something bigger. Plus, the people are great! Having attended local, regional, and national AMA events, I can honestly say there is no greater feeling than being surrounded by like-minded people with the same vision and goals.

What’s next?

For the next few months, we will be focusing on how best to implement our three priorities for the 2018/2019 year.

– Collaborations with other professional organizations: For starters, we’ll be partnering with PRSA Hampton Roads in September for a wonderful speaker discussing diversity in the media, an extremely important topic these days.

– More networking opportunities: Stay tuned for monthly happy hour pop-ups throughout Hampton Roads and opportunities to learn more about the many agencies we have in our area. Interested in hosting something at your office or favorite watering hole? Let us know!

– Interactive workshops: In addition to our roundtables, we are leaning on area thought leaders to help facilitate hands-on learning opportunities in marketing and professional development. If you missed our “Trademark and Branding” workshop in July, don’t sweat it. We will be having another one soon!

An unmentioned but always important goal is to continue our presence on the Southside as well as the Peninsula (I’m looking at you Hampton, Newport News, Williamsburg, and beyond!). By combining our area’s talent and resources, there is seriously nothing we can’t accomplish. And I want to thank all of you in advance for taking the time to volunteer and attend our upcoming events.
